And that’s certainly true the minute anyone walks through your front door. When a guest steps into your hallway, they should be met by a beautiful yet practical space that sets the tone for the rest of your home.

In reality, hallways can often be seen merely as corridors that are neglected when it comes to interior styling. If you want to make an immediate impact in your hallway there’s no better starting point than considering where you put all the clutter! Choosing slimline hallway furniture that incorporates some sort of storage (such as under shelf baskets) can transform even the smallest entranceway into a space that’s both stylish to look at but functional in terms of its practicality.

SIZE UP YOUR HALLWAY SPACE

The design of your hallway will of course be influenced by the size and space you have available so considering furniture and accessories that maximise your space can turn dark and cramped into bright and roomy.

The first lesson in making your hallway feel bigger is to carefully select furniture pieces which are both practical and style-focused – instantly creating an entranceway that is not only a joy to walk into but which utilises your space to the maximum.

The perfect entrance: our choices

I always choose a slim console table (like the Ashwicke console table above) where you can bring the outside in by accessorising with a beautiful faux flower arrangement, or add a table lamp or scented candle for a cosy night time feel.
I also make the most of the space above and below. You can capitalise on the vertical space above by hanging a large mirror which will reflect light and give the impression of a wider hallway, and use the space below for handy storage baskets to hide away shoes and any other clutter.

You can also create a sense of cohesion by coordinating larger units with smaller containers, such as the wicker baskets mentioned earlier and other hallway staples such as a coat rack, umbrella stand and welly stand to keep your hallway organised.
Together these hallway ideas will ensure your entrance doesn’t feel overcrowded and chaotic. By selecting quality pieces of the right sized furniture, even the most challenging hallway space can be transformed into one of the most welcoming and stylish areas of the home.

I always think the month of march heralds the end of winter and the beginning of spring…

and that’s when you start to think about extending your living space outside and creating that garden seating sanctuary.

Get garden ready this spring

As new garden furniture is a bit more of a longer term purchase, it makes sense to think carefully about the furniture you choose to create that perfect garden haven. Make sure it fits nicely into the space you have in mind and that it’s both comfortable to sit on and weatherproof. In this example we have chosen a very sociable seating arrangement, the PORTHALLOW CORNER SOFA SET to create an inviting external destination for friends and family to enjoy.

The Porthallow collection design pairs wonderfully with the more traditional garden. The pale whitewash finish for the Acacia wooden frame perfectly complements a natural stone patio such as York stone or brickwork pavers. Whilst it’s a given that quality outdoor garden furniture such as this is crafted to endure the elements all year round, it is still wise to take extra measures to ensure it stays in top-notch condition throughout the seasons.

EXTENDING THE LIFE OF YOUR GARDEN FURNITURE

Taking extra care to keep weatherproof garden furniture protected will without doubt extend its life…

and that’s where outdoor furniture covers come into their own.  They serve as a protective shield for your outdoor seating, tables, and other furnishings, whatever their material.

Furniture covers provide:

An extra barrier to protect your outdoor pieces from the English Weather – preventing damage caused by rain, frost and snow, helping to keep your furniture in peak condition throughout the seasons.

UV Protection – Furniture covers help minimise the impact of exposure to sunlight which can cause bleaching and fading of your outdoor furniture.

Protection from dust, dirt and animal droppings. A quality weight cover helps keep your furniture clean and ready to use. It also cuts down time-consuming maintenance as well as avoiding the need for abrasive cleaners that can damage and bleach your furniture over time.

Your perfect garden sanctuary - we’ve got it covered

We have chosen the OUTDOOR CORNER SOFA SET COVER which is the perfect size to protect our chosen PORTHALLOW CORNER SOFA SET and other corner sofa sets of similar dimensions, protecting it all year round. Made from durable Ripstop Polyester, this deep grey cover comes as a single piece, with a toggle for tightening and a drawstring bag for storing your cover when not in use. Dirt, UV and water resistant this large cover is also designed to be breathable allowing moisture to escape. We recommend before covering your outdoor furniture that you remove the fabric cushions and store them indoors.

Our style, whilst essentially English, takes inspiration from many cultures.

In this project,  we introduced contemporary furniture and accessories into a Victorian villa garden room – embracing influences from Italy to India and beyond.

Boho Garden Room inspired by India and Italy

The client’s brief was bohemian relaxation and through clever use of neutral tones, prints and various textures, that’s exactly what we created.

Boho really was the name of the game – from the bespoke sofas with wooden frames to the colourful mix of fabrics

and textures in the cushions and throws. Oversized faux plants and foliage in hessian baskets and glass vases perfectly display the beauty of the natural world, bringing a touch of majestic jungle to this Cheshire home.

Boho Table Arrangement

Materials and textures range from raw and rustic to smooth and seductive, while designs that incorporate wrapped and bound elements provide an experimental and decorative touch, such as tabletop featuring woven rattan and accessories made from rustic fibres, including plant pots, oversized wicker vases and rattan side tables.

The perfectly considered console table is naturally inspired, where curved shapes and hard edges meet

plush textures and botanical florals – a winning combination to create visual impact while maintaining a sense of tranquillity. From coral to shell, rustic pots to the Carrera marble and white-washed wood, the power of nature prevails in every carefully chosen accessory and ornament. The effect is an eclectic mix – all our client needs to do is sit back, close their eyes and within just a moment, they could be in Ibiza, Marrakech or Capri – wherever their mood takes them.

Natural materials and textures in a country cottage with a contemporary extension

Natural materials and a range of textures were the overriding theme for this project in Lower Peover, which involved the complete design and styling of the lounge and open-plan kitchen and dining room.

Anita Jones Interior Styling Kitchen Diner

After investing in a breathtaking contemporary extension, the client was keen to make the most of the stunning open views and light-filled spaces afforded by the vast amount of glass and surrounding gardens.

The cottage was transformed from a series of small dark rooms into fewer large interconnected open-plan spaces ideal for entertaining. A neutral colour palette replaced the repressive black beams and the double-height kitchen and dining extension was a welcome modern addition to the traditional property.

The first task was a makeover of the lounge, which kickstarted the rest of the project. Once we’d selected the ideal neutral colour scheme, it was time to explore the critical key furniture and accessory trends to take this unique home into its next phase of life.

Materials and textures range from raw and rustic to smooth and seductive, although most were still heavily influenced by the beauty of the natural world. With its exquisite imperfections, natural raw wood is ideal for large furniture and smaller accessories – the perfect choice for a home surrounded by stunning woodland and rolling countryside.

We created a bespoke piece of furniture for the lounge from solid light oak to house the TV controls

and provide useful storage for the media wall and contemporary feature fireplace.

Continuing the natural theme, we incorporated stoneware accessories, a rustic wooden clock made from bleached driftwood with brass trimmings and filigree brass side tables.

Adding an element of cosy comfort, the soft furnishings, bespoke sofas and plush central pouffe (with hidden storage) provided a complete contrast to the clean, sharp edges of the rustic elements. Sumptuous velvets in a neutral colour palette and the crisp ivory linen of the occasional chairs demonstrate how effectively a combination of contemporary and classic design pieces can work seamlessly together.

The lounge flows straight into the kitchen and dining area, with porcelain ‘wood style’ tiles tying the two spaces together and creating a homogenous flow of textures and colour palettes. Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White and Moles Breath perfectly set the tone for this welcoming and relaxing space. Carrera marble worktops and splashbacks create smooth, clean lines, while the chrome sockets and cabinet hardware add a touch of elegance.

This sense of luxury follows into the dining area, with its striking vaulted ceiling, statement light fittings and cosy log burner. A Carrera marble dining table ties the two spaces together and an oversized ornate mirror brings the outside in, bouncing natural light around the room and reflecting the gorgeous garden outside.

The space also afforded our client a breakfast area with floor-to-ceiling bespoke cabinetry and a comfy reading nook, providing the ideal place to take in the Sunday papers or natter on the phone with a friend. Patio doors lead directly to the green-fingered client’s beloved and perfectly maintained herb garden, greenhouse and cutting garden – after enjoying their time outdoors, the oak and marble worktop offers the perfect space to arrange flowers or sort through their latest crop of homegrown veg.
